Linda Edna Cardellini (n e Lorraine (Hernan) was the daughter of Wayne David Cardellini (a businessman) in Redwood City. Her parents are of Italian, German (from the paternal maternal grandmother), Irish and Scottish heritage. Linda was born in the San Francisco Bay region, California as the youngest out from four children. It was as a ten year old when she played a role as a vocalist in a school's annual Christmas production. She performed in school plays and local community theatre. Linda attended Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California. After graduating, she had to choose between going in New York to pursue theater or Los Angeles to pursue film and television. She chose LA. Linda played her first major character on Bone Chillers, a 1996 television show. The role she landed her first big break as a character in Freaks and Geeks (1998). She started her career as an actress in British actor in Just William (2010), an British series on British television. After her character as Lady Rose MacClare in the period drama series Downton Abbey (2012-2015), her first big break came in her role as the lead in the fantasy film Cinderella (2015). James was then cast as Countess Natasha Rostova as part of the adaptation of War & Peace (2016). Also, she appeared in numerous films like Baby Driver (2017) and The Dig -2021. We're Going To Again (2019) as well as Yesterday (2018). Her character as Pamela Anderson was recognized with a Golden Globe nomination and a Primetime Emmy Award.
